K-9 Casey (Ventura County Sheriff's K-9 SAR)
How did National Police Dog Foundation & Pet Emergency Clinic help "K-9 Casey" from Ventura County Sheriff K-9 SAR?
On May
20, 2009, Casey was deployed by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to Chicago to work a bank robbery case in which a police
officer was shot in the leg during a gun fight with the three bank robbers. While waiting to board her plane from LAX to Chicago,
Casey’s handler, Ann Anderson, noticed two large lumps on Casey. The first was located on the back of her neck and the other on her
throat.
Anderson immediately contacted Dr. Ron Dalzell, and made arrangements for him to examine Casey upon their return
from Chicago. Dr. Dalzell and Dr. Tim Crowe examined Casey and determined that the best approach was to conduct a fine needle
aspiration of both lumps as soon as possible.
On June 5, 2009, Anderson brought Casey to Pet Emergency Clinic, located in Thousand
Oaks, California. Dr. Crowe performed the fine needle aspiration of both lumps and concluded that the lump on Casey’s neck needed
to be removed right away. Dr. Crowe suspected that lump could be a cancerous mast cell tumor. He immediately took Casey
into surgery.
During the surgery, Dr. Crowe and Dr. Cheryl Braswell removed both lumps and found an additional problem that needed
to be removed from Casey’s tongue. The surgery took hours to perform.
Dr. Crowe and Pet Emergency Clinic donated 100%
of the $4,550.00 surgery and related expenses. Ventura County Sheriff K-9 Search and Rescue Team is an all volunteer organization
that depends completely on donations to train and care for the K-9s. Without Dr. Crowe and Pet Emergency Clinic’s generous donation,
Casey would not have been able to have the surgery.
We graciously thank Dr. Crowe, Dr. Braswell, Pet Emergency Clinic, and their
wonderful staff for their tremendous donation to Casey and the Ventura County Sheriff K-9 Search and Rescue Team.
